Bladder Reconstruction

The opportunity to develop advanced skills in bladder reconstruction.

In the UK, the number of units with the resources to undertake bladder reconstruction is small, and thus many patients are denied the opportunity of avoiding a bag. Trainees do not see enough cases to become competent. In Egypt, where much important research has been done in this field, almost all the cases are concentrated in Mansoura. The combination of a strong surgical team and a large number of patients with bladder cancer has allowed a very good teaching programme to develop. BUF proposes to fund four preceptorships for UK urologists to Mansoura University Urology & Nephrology Centre over the next year.

Training in Robotically Assisted Surgery

BUF is pleased to announce funding for training in robotically assisted surgery. Each training programme will be individually tailored to the applicant.

BJU International/British Urological Foundation Travelling Fellowships for Non-Clinical Scientists

Applications are invited for Travelling Fellowships from non-clinical scientists working in the urology field. The following criteria apply:

Post doctoral scientists of at least one year’s standing
Primarily working on urological projects
Applications must be supported with reference to work published in the period from 1 January, 2004 to 31 December 2006
Support of the laboratory director and collaborating urological clinician required
Submissions to include a plan of the proposed travel with costings
CV of the applicant should be supplied

Grants

Eight grants of £2,500 are available. In the case of the four awarded by the BJU International, preference will be given to individuals who have published work in the journal, but there are no geographical limits.

For the four BUF grants, preference will be given to candidates from British or Irish Institutions.

Closing date is 30 June 2007

The travel must commence in the academic year 2007/2008.

The intention of these awards is to support educational and collaborative visits to laboratories in any country in the world. It is unlikely that support would be given to travel to a conference, unless it was an essential part of the main travel programme.

Preceptorships at the Cleveland Clinic

An opportunity to train in advanced laparoscopic urological surgery

These opportunities are available due to a joint initiative between Dr Inderbir Gill and BUF. Four applicants will be awarded £6000 each to enable them to complete a one month preceptorship to be taken between August 2007 and June 2008.

Applicants should

Be in NHS consultant practice in the UK or Ireland
Be able to show evidence of expanding laparoscopic practice and have participated in the BAUS Audit of Laparoscopic Nephrectomy
Have a commitment to advancing laparoscopic surgery in the UK. An agreement to teach on BAUS Section of Endourology/Office of Education Skills Courses for a minimum of two years will be sought as well as agreement to act as mentor to individual surgeons
Provide a written commitment from the Chief Executive of the applicant's Trust to confirm that a business plan to introduce advanced laparoscopic urology has been agreed and will be implemented within six months of completion of the preceptorship
Produce a letter of support from his/her urological colleagues in the Trust
