Research Scholarship Case Study

Mr Mark Emberton
BUF Scholar 1997/1998

The BUF scholarship was one of the first grants that Mark Emberton was awarded and helped to establish his career in academic urology. He is now a Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Urology, London, having published numerous papers and presented at urology symposia worldwide.

BUF grants are extremely important as they help fund the transition from developing an idea through to getting major funding from the large academic organisations.

With so much emphasis on other diseases covered by the National Service Frameworks, it is often difficult to get funding for research in areas such as urology. However the funds from BUF means that we can carry out initial research that would otherwise be overlooked.

The work carried out by Mark Emberton following on from his BUF scholarship has subsequently been presented at the British Association of Urological Surgeons’ and American Urological Associations’ annual meetings and his research was published in the Journal of Urology in 1999.1

BUF grants play an important role in the development of urological research – they help get the ball rolling, they allow you to develop as a researcher and they help you to gain recognition for future ideas that can help improve the management of urological disease.
